Pour le piano
Transcriptions and original works
The program is divided into two complementary parts. The first features the piano as a transformative voice in works originally conceived for other instruments: Brahms’s Variations in D minor, Op. 18 and Bach’s monumental Chaconne in Busoni’s transcription. The second part is entirely devoted to the original piano repertoire. In the Pavane pour une infante défunte, Jeux d’eau, and Une barque sur l’océan, Ravel explores sound worlds that would later inspire orchestral versions of these works. The program concludes with Debussy’s Pour le piano, whose title explicitly affirms the instrument’s role as the poetic and timbral protagonist of the entire program.
